REVIEWS

". . . legal thrillers have proliferated like, well, lawyers.  But "Death Row Defender" is a cut above the average."

Jay Strafford 09/27, Richmond Times-Dispatch.com

"Ray Dix's legal thriller Death Row Defender tells the suspenseful story of an ex-public defender turned appellate advocate for an innocent death row convict.  . . . After five years on death row, Clayton's number is finally up as the governor uses his execution as political fodder for his own reelection." ". . . the depth of Dix's treatment of the criminal appeals process makes this novel more than a murder mystery. Death Row Defender is clearly written by an author who has first-hand experience in defending capital cases, and it showcases Ray Dix's expertise as a writer."

The Florida Bar Journal, February, 2006, Vol. 80, No.2

"DEATH ROW DEFENDER . . . is as interesting a legal detective story as one will find . . . it has everything."  "Bravo!"

"An intricately plotted legal thriller and criminal defense procedural which I just couldn't put down. Ray Dix takes the reader up a winding and dangerous road of criminal defense -- a last-minute appeal of a death sentence and the reinvestigation of an "air-tight case" which a lot of good and bad people don't want attorney Woody Thomas to look at."

Dirk Wyle, Author of, Pharmacology Is Murder

" . . . a page turner . . . compelling  . . . crisp and fast  . . .captures the stress, the frustration and the excitement that accompanies the defending of a capital case through the courts."

William McLain, capital appeals attorney, Tallahassee, Florida

". . . well-crafted. . . well executed.
"
. . . keeps the readers engaged."

ABOUT the book

40 words

A man who swears he is innocent faces execution in Florida's electric chair. Retired Public Defender, Woody Thomas, fights doubts of the man's innocence, the police, the system, an assassin, and his own past to save his client's life.

 180 words

It has been five years since Jon Clayton was convicted of the rape and execution style murder of Donella Nash. It is springtime in an election year and, as part of the Governor's war on crime, Jon Clayton is scheduled to be executed in October. Clayton still swears he is innocent, but he had a record of violence and the bullet found in Nash's head came from his pistol.

Woody Thomas, an ex-Public Defender, is appointed by the court to pursue Clayton's final appeal. Woody relives the trial through the transcripts, then locates and questions the witnesses. The case looks solid, but federal agents begin to follow him, local police try to frame him, and someone is trying to kill him.

As Woody's troubles mount, the murder case begins to fall apart and the Governor signs Clayton's death warrant - - five months early.
